A professional spider control treatment can provide long lasting protection from spiders, protecting your family and pets. In Melbourne we do have some dangerous spiders, in particular the redback and white-tailed spider.
Web-building spiders are covered in our general pest treatment, which comes with a 6-month warranty. If you have a specific spider problem or major infestation, you may require our specialist “spider spray”.
When considering pest control for spiders, it is important to understand the difference between web-building spiders and hunting or running spiders. Web-building spiders, such as redbacks and black house spiders, build webs and so are relatively easy to spot and treat. Hunting or running spiders, such as white-tailed spiders and huntsman, don’t build webs and run along the ground. They may come inside houses “by accident”, looking for prey or trying to escape the weather (heat or rain).
When we spray for spiders, firstly we carry out an inspection to identify the location of the various web-building spiders. This is the main target of the spider spray – we spray all webs and hiding places. Not only will this kill any spiders present, but it will prevent new spiders moving in and building their webs for several months. We will also spray eaves, around all windows and doors and in vents. We may also blow insecticide powder into roof voids and sub-floors if required.
Hunting and running spiders are move challenging to control as the walk across surfaces to get inside buildings. To help prevent these spiders entering the house, we carry out a perimeter spray around the outside of the house, 1m up the wall and 1m out from the wall to create a “barrier”. However, when these spiders walk over surfaces, they often walk on the tips of their legs, only picking up a small amount of insecticide. This means they may still enter the house before dying. However, these spider sprays and indeed the general pest treatment will eliminate other insects and spiders, which are the food for these hunting spiders. With a lack of food on offer, these hunting spiders tend to go elsewhere.
Spiders are generally considered as beneficial, as they help get rid of pest insects. Whilst some homeowners are very tolerant of spiders, many feel the need to call for a spider exterminator in Melbourne if they are an arachnophobe or have children or pets they wish to protect from potential spider bites. Certainly, bites from redbacks and white-tailed spiders are a cause for concern.
Spiders are very much part of the environment and so there is very little that can be done to reduce their numbers other than carrying out a pest spray. However, reducing the vegetation immediately around the perimeter of the building will certainly help, as it will reduce insect prey numbers and reduce spider hiding places.
In Melbourne the four most common types of spiders found around homes are the black house spider, redback spider, white-tailed spider and the various huntsman species.
The standard spider bite treatment from St. John’s ambulance:
If small children have been bitten, seek medical attention. In particular for redback spider bites (for adults and children), if more severe symptoms develop such as severe pain, sweating and nausea seek medical attention immediately.
For funnel-web spiders or other large black spiders (such as mouse spiders), snake bite first aid, including the use of a pressure bandage is recommended. Seek medical assistance immediate. A photo of the spider culprit is useful to identify the species.
Although many people believe white-tailed spider bites can cause flesh to decay, this is an urban myth. There is nothing in white-tailed spider bites that can cause this and scientific studies of confirmed white-tail spider bites had shown no such effects. However, it is possible that bacteria have been introduce during the bite or through scratching that can cause flesh to decay. However, this can occur with all spider bites.
